Southgate, 53, confirmed the waistcoat will not be returning at this summer’s tournament in Germany.

‘Whenever you put something on, you’re making some sort of a statement, aren’t you? I am conscious of that now,’ Southgate told GQ.

‘This year, it will be more short-sleeved knits than a suit and tie, because we’re trying to create a relaxed environment.

‘When you’re working with young lads, you don’t want to be too stiff – in what you’re doing or wearing.’

Shops like Marks & Spencer had reported a 35 per cent increase in waistcoat sales during the 2018 World Cup as a result of Southgate’s fashion choice.

The phenomenon was labelled as ‘the Gareth Southgate effect’ and the feel-good feeling he brought to the nation

‘It was a lovely moment to have that connection with the public,’ Southgate said ahead of Euro 2020.

‘I haven’t worn a waistcoat on its own since… I don’t think I’ll be wearing a waistcoat this summer.’
