England boss Gareth Southgate has confirmed he has no plans to bring back his iconic waistcoat at Euro 2024, but revealed he will have a new wardrobe ahead of the tournament.
Southgate sported a waistcoat throughout England’s run to the semi-finals at the 2018 FIFA Cup.Â
His choice became a talking point throughout the Three Lions campaign, with some fans opting to mirror his choice in tribute as England advanced through the tournament.
Southgate ditched the waistcoat at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with but fans have continued to comment on his fashion choices since.
The England boss admitted when modelling for QC ahead of Euro 2024 that he is aware of the discussion around his image on the touchline.Â
Southgate, 53, confirmed the waistcoat will not be returning at this summer’s tournament in Germany.
‘Whenever you put something on, you’re making some sort of a statement, aren’t you? I am conscious of that now,’ Southgate told GQ.
‘This year, it will be more short-sleeved knits than a suit and tie, because we’re trying to create a relaxed environment.
‘When you’re working with young lads, you don’t want to be too stiff – in what you’re doing or wearing.’
Shops like Marks & Spencer had reported a 35 per cent increase in waistcoat sales during the 2018 World Cup as a result of Southgate’s fashion choice.
The phenomenon was labelled as ‘the Gareth Southgate effect’ and the feel-good feeling he brought to the nationÂ
‘It was a lovely moment to have that connection with the public,’ Southgate said ahead of Euro 2020.
‘I haven’t worn a waistcoat on its own since… I don’t think I’ll be wearing a waistcoat this summer.’
Southgate instead opted for a knitted navy blue polka dot tie for most of national team’s games during the Euros.
Fans dubbed the knitted polka dot navy blue tie ‘the new waistcoat’.
The England boss, however, was spotted in a suit in the latter stages of the tournament as the Three Lions made the final, before losing on penalties.Â
Southgate opted for a knitted polo shirt and navy suit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with his clothing coming as part of the FA’s long-running partnership with M&S.
The company last week unveiled the formalwear the Three Lions will wear off the field in Germany.
Marcus Rashford Aaron Ramsdale and Conor Gallagher modelled the formal range, which includes overshirts, blouson jackets, a quarter zip knit sweater and straight-leg trousers.
Rashford was included in the images despite being left out of Southgate’s England squad.Â
In Qatar, their M&S range featured navy short trousers, casual jackets and cream knitwear.Â
