Gardening jobs for June

Must read

Towering lupins, globe-like peonies, delicate verbascums, it must be sunny June. The greens of spring, partnered with the colour of herbaceous perennials make it a beloved month in the gardening calendar. Ensure to care for roses and be mindful of watering the garden efficiently without wastage. Hanging baskets can also be put out and biennials foxgloves and wallflowers can be sown. If you’re growing for cut flowers, now is a good time to make a magnificent display.

  • Hanging baskets for spring and summer: Hanging baskets have the ability to elevate our outside spaces – literally. Find eight of our favourite hanging basket flowers for spring.

  • Water your garden wisely: Water is a precious resource and with our climate heating up, it’s important to consider how you keep your plants healthy whatever the weather.

  • Deal with aphids: Perhaps the most common of all garden insect pests, the blanket term ‘aphid’ includes many species of greenfly and blackfly that target a range of different plants. Often little or no treatment is required, as these creatures are eaten by many other garden animals.

  • Hoe borders regularly: Reduce weeds by regularly tending to your borders

  • Keep evergreen hedges in tip-top shape by pruning in early summer

  • Sow biennials: look forward to their pretty flowers next spring and summer. Most are easy-to-grow and beautiful so the wait is worth it.

  • Support floppy plants: Obelisks can provide support for everything from climbing roses to sweet peas, but which are the best obelisks for your garden?

  • Pinch off the side shoots of your tomatoes

  • Sow peas, carrots, radishes, runner beans, lettuce, swede, turnips, beetroot, and courgettes.
