Newly elected UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer has appointed Lisa Nandy as the new Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
The gambling industry and the ongoing white paper reform will feature among a wide remit of priorities for the Wigan MP.
There was speculation that Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell could become the DCMS leader having previously been shadow Secretary of State for the department.
However, on Friday evening, the prime minister confirmed Powell as Lord President of the Council and Leader of the House of Commons, with Nandy taking up the top post at the DCMS.
Nandy’s most recent brief in Labour’s shadow cabinet before the election was in international development.
The government had been progressing key elements of the white paper over the past 12 months following its publication in April 2024, but the recent general election halted any and all progress.
A landslide victory for Labour saw the party return to power for the first time since 2010.
The Betting and Gaming Council welcomed the “much-needed political certainty” offered by Labour’s general election victory.
BGC chair Michael Dugher said: “BGC members are currently in the midst of the biggest regulatory changes in a generation following the publication of the white paper, which Labour supported, and much of this work will carry on now the election is complete.
“Our members have the much-needed political certainty they need to plan and invest for a sustainable future.”
