Dons Fit offers women of all abilities a welcoming environment to take part in group exercises and wellness activities, such as circuits, yoga and sports with the aim to improve health, fitness and confidence.
Kemi Akinola, Deputy Leader of Wandsworth Council, said:
“We proud of the role the Council has played to help get this fantastic initiative off the ground. It is important that women have safe spaces to participate in sports and fitness activities. We all know the physical and mental benefits of exercise, but projects like this can help to build a sense of community too.”
The programme is funded by the Premier League Fans Fund, a scheme which aims to inspire a sense of belonging through meaningful engagement between clubs, fans and their community.
Our Regeneration Team approached the Foundation about facilitating these sessions and then conducted a survey of local women to understand what kind of activity they would find most beneficial and where they would like them to take place.
Cheryl Gill, Community Development Manager for AFC Wimbledon Foundation, said:
‘‘Dons Fit for women is not just about improving physical health but a chance to connect and build a supportive local community. We want to create a space that is inclusive, comfortable, and empowering for women from diverse cultural backgrounds to take part in exercise and feel happier and healthier.”
The weekly sessions take place each Tuesday, until 2nd July from 11am – 12pm in Davies Sports Hall. Due to a huge interest already, a second programme will be starting in Roehampton Leisure Centre on Mondays 10am – 11am.
