Limited Run Games reveals four PS1 games for PS5 and PS4
Purveyor of retro game re-releases Limited Run Games recently unveiled four new PS1 games coming to PS5 and PS4 in 2025 at its LRG3 2024 showcase. Last year, the publisher thrilled us with five PS1 ports with PS5 trophies to be released throughout 2024, so it’s not too surprising to see they’re pulling the same magic trick this year.
As with last time, these new PS1 ports for PS5 and PS4 will use Limited Run Games’ “Carbon Engine,” which allows these classic titles to implement modern features like trophy support. Check out all four PS1 games coming to PS5 and PS4 with trophy support below!
Tomba 2
- When available, you can find those Tomba 2 trophies here
- PS5 Release Date: TBA 2025
- Genre: Platformer
We’re pretty close to the launch of Tomba 1 on PS5 and PS4 on Monday, August 1, 2024, so why not start drumming up hype for the sequel now? Tomba 2 The Evil Swine Return originally released in the West on PS1 in the year 2000 and was relatively well received.
Critical feedback largely focused on the fact that it was a little too similar to the original Tomba, but honestly, it’s hard to see that as criticism at all today. Both Tomba and Tomba 2 are an absolute joy to play, blending 2D platforming action with some clever 3D lane-switching tricks.
There are some innovative RPG elements in here that are firmly ahead of their time as well, so make sure to give both games a shot when they release on PS5 and PS4!
Fear Effect
- When available, you can find those Fear Effect trophies here
- PS5 Release Date: TBA 2025
- Genre: Action Adventure
Tragically, the Fear Effect franchise name has seen a bit of rough love after 2018 saw the long-awaited third game in the series released on PS4 to a brutal critical reception. So, it seems the series’ champions are going back to square one and releasing the original PS1 game on PS5 and PS4 this time.
Initially released on the PS1 in 2000, Fear Effect was a stunning showcase of what cinematic action adventure games could look like on the PlayStation. While the controls might suffer by today’s standards, this classic definitely still has a lot of strengths thanks to its expert direction and forward-thinking cel-shaded art style.
Here’s hoping we get a platinum trophy to unlock when this one launches on PS5 and PS4, because that’s just the incentive we need to experience this PS1 gem all over again.
Fighting Force and Fighting Force 2
Both Fighting Force and its sequel Fighting Force 2 were developed for PS1 by Core Design — the studio behind the first Tomb Raider games. With the studio having so much 3D gaming pedigree on the PS1, players expected tremendous success from the Fighting Force games.
Instead, what they got was a fairly mixed bag. The first Fighting Force was a basic 3D beat ’em up that lacked the flair and charisma of earlier examples of the genre like Capcom’s Final Fight. Then, the developers mixed in shooting mechanics for Fighting Force 2, which made it play like a less exciting version of Sony’s Syphon Filter.
So, it’s safe to say bundling both games together for the Fighting Force Collection won’t make for the most exciting PS1 game compilations on PS5 and PS4. Still, there’s plenty of novelty to love in revisiting these Core Design titles today, so we’re still looking forward to giving them another spin in 2025.
