The founder and owner of high street fashion chain Mango, Isak Andic, has died in a mountain accident aged 71.

The businessman slipped and fell over 100 meters from a cliff while hiking with relatives in the Montserrat caves near Barcelona on Saturday, a police spokesperson said.

“His departure leaves a huge void but all of us are, in some way, his legacy and the testimony of his achievements,” Mango’s CEO Toni Ruiz said in a statement.

“It is up to us … to ensure that Mango continues to be the project that Isak was ambitious and proud of.”

Born in Istanbul, Andic moved with his family to the northeastern Spanish region of Catalonia in the 1960s and founded Mango in 1984.

The company, which sells clothing and accessories for men and women, opened its first UK store in 1999.

It has since become a high street fixture, with around 60 outlets across the country, including a flagship store on Oxford Street.

Andic was non-executive chairman of Mango when he died.

He was worth $4.5bn (3.56 billion), according to Forbes.

Mango had a turnover of 3.1 billion euros in 2023, with 33 per cent of its business online and stores in more than 100 countries.

Kate Moss was the face of brand in 2011, boosting its popularity in the UK.
