Foreign Office new Italy travel advice amid emergency planning update

The Foreign Office has issued a warning for people travelling to Italy after a number of volcanic tremors were detected. In the new update officials said that people going to an area which might be under threat should first familiarise themselves on safety precautions to take.

Local authorities have updated emergency planning as a result of the volcanoes becoming more active, the Foreign Office said. It added: “There are several active volcanoes in southern Italy. National emergency planning has been updated for Vesuvius as well as the Phlegraean fields, an area that remains active and which has experienced tremors in 2024. The Italian Government Civil Protection Department has updated its National Emergency Planning for Vesuvius which can be read here. It has also issued new advice in the Phlegraean Fields saying since 2023, the frequency of earthquakes has gradually increased. To read that advice click here.

There is also a risk of forest fires in the summer which the Foreign Office said are: “Highly dangerous and unpredictable.” It advises people to check latest alerts and weather forecast and follow advice of local authorities if you’re considering travelling to affected areas and adds: “Take care when visiting or driving through woodland areas and report fires to the emergency services.”
