Foreign Office issues new travel warning to UK tourists heading to France

Must read

A new warning has been issued to anyone planning to go to France. The UK Government alert to holidaymakers says flights and ferries face disruption because of industrial action.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) provides advice about the risks of travel to help British nationals make informed decisions. It urges people to do some research on their intended destination before setting off and make sure they have appropriate travel insurance that covers their itinerary, any planned activities, and potential expenses in an emergency.

The latest guidance comes amid the threat of industrial action at airports and ports over the coming month. The FCDO said: “Throughout June, planned industrial action by port workers and air traffic control unions is expected to disrupt some ferry routes and flights across France, with some routes and flights diverted or cancelled. Check your operator’s advice before travelling, including where you are taking connecting flights.”

And it added: “Until September, possible industrial action may cause disruption on the Paris public transport system (RATP). Check the RATP website for live service updates.”

Any Brits planning to head to an EU country (except Ireland), or to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, or Vatican City, should follow the Schengen area passport requirements. This means your passport must be issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country and valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave (check the expiry date).

Make sure you check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before October 1, 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. Speak to the French Embassy in the UK if you think that your passport does not meet both these rules.
