The incident affected flights departing to Amsterdam, Heathrow, Stornoway, Gatwick, Sumburgh and Bristol.

British Airways, easyJet and Loganair were caught up in the disruption.

The issue was resolved just before noon but passengers are urged to check with airlines if they are flying today.

A statement from Inverness Airport read: “The technical issue is now resolved and Inverness airport is open for flights.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and advise that passengers still check with airlines as the disruption may impact flights today.”

An easyJet spokesperson added: “Following the closure of the Inverness airport runway this morning, flights to London Gatwick and London Luton have been delayed departing and a flight to Bristol has been unable to operate.

“Whilst the situation is outside of our control, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused and are providing customers on cancelled flights with options to rebook or a refund well as hotel accommodation and meals where needed.

“Customers are able to check the status of their flight on our Flight Tracker or via the app, for real time updates.”

Inverness Airport sees up to one million passengers per year and is a busy hub for the Highland community.
