A Jet2 flight from Belfast International Airport, heading to Gran Canaria on Thursday evening, was forced to stop over in Portugal due to a ‘disruptive passenger’.

The airline confirmed to the Belfast Telegraph that “flight LS371 from Belfast International to Gran Canaria diverted to Faro Airport on Thursday evening so that police could offload a disruptive passenger”.

A spokesperson added: “The flight departed to take customers on their well-deserved holidays in Gran Canaria once the disruptive passenger was removed.”

Another passenger on the plane at the time told this newspaper about the ordeal.

“Last night, after two people started to fight verbally and put the air hostess and the aircraft in danger, local police entered the aircraft and one man was taken into custody,” he explained.

“The people seemed to be intoxicated with alcohol.”

Jet2 customers then also received an email from the airline, which stated: “We are sorry that your flight has been diverted to the Algarve.

“We are doing everything that we can to have you on your way as soon as possible.

“Thank you in advance for patience and understanding during this time.”
