Prolific travellers have shared their tips to avoid dangerous situations when arriving at a new hotel or returning to your room after a night out – after their own run ins with problems
A flight attendant has shared a game-changing tip for ensuring safety in hotel rooms.
The savvy traveller, called Esther, took to TikTok to reveal that after checking into a hotel, she uses a clever trick to ascertain if someone is lurking under the bed.
The cabin crew member disclosed that the most effective way to “check that no one is under the bed without looking” is by tossing a bottle of water. If guests “throw a bottle under the bed” and it “doesn’t come out on the other side,” it shows someone might be concealed there.
This can be done with a water bottle or any other items available in the room, such as complimentary toiletries or a can of Coke from the minibar.
In an exclusive chat with Express, another flight attendant named Nassim shared his top tip for maintaining safety in hotel rooms at night. He explained that he always positions his suitcase by the door, a smart move that alerts travellers if someone attempts to enter their room.
This trick can be performed with luggage or virtually any object in the room. Additionally, Nassim meticulously inspects the entire room each time he returns to the hotel to ensure no one is hiding.
He recounted a chilling incident where a fellow crew member was attacked in her hotel room by someone who had been hiding in the wardrobe because she “did not check properly”.
She detailed her safety routine: “They got attacked so every time I got to a hotel room I would use my luggage case to keep the hotel door open. I then go inside and check everywhere.”
“I would check the bathroom, under the bed, inside the wardrobes, under the table and behind the curtains to make sure that no one was in there. I would never ever enter a room without doing that,” she added.
Echoing her sentiments, American flight attendant Kat Kamali stressed the importance of vigilance upon entering a hotel room, advising guests to always ensure “if there’s anyone in your room” immediately after arrival.
She also highlighted the need for discretion about personal details, urging guests to never mention their “room number out loud” and to double-check “behind the curtains and under the bed” once they’ve checked in.
Travelling can involve unexpected problems. Singapore Airlines have had to issue a statement following the death of a passenger on a flight from London during severe turbulence.
The airline has confirmed that one person on board flight #SQ321 has died and others have been injured after the plane, which was travelling from London to Singapore, was forced to make an emergency landing in Thailand due to extreme weather conditions on Tuesday afternoon. There were 211 passengers and 18 crew on the Boeing 777-300ER jet when it experienced severe turbulence while entering airspace in the region, which is currently experiencing extreme tropical thunderstorms.
