A man in his 30s has appeared before a special sitting of Gorey District Court, Wexford this evening in connection with a fatal assault in New Ross town on Sunday, December 1 in which an eight-year-old girl died.
Mohammad Al Shakir Al Tamimi (34) with an address of Lower William Street, New Ross, Wexford, appeared before Judge Kevin Staunton on Wednesday, December 4, in relation to the murder of his eight-year-old daughter, Malika Noor Al Kattib and the attempted murder of Malika’s mother, Aisha Al Kattib (31) in their home.
Detective Garda Dónal Doyle of New Ross Garda Station told the court how he arrested Mr Al Tamimi on December 3 at University Hospital Waterford at 12.30 pm.
Mr Al Tamimi was then transported to Wexford Garda Station, where on Wednesday, he was charged by Det. Garda Doyle at 5.04 pm with murder and attempted murder.
The court was told Mr Al Tamimi made no reply to the charges.
An application was made for him to be remanded in custody, while defence counsel Mr Tim Cummings noted there were no instructions to apply for bail from his client.
Mr Al Tamimi will be remanded in Garda custody to appear before Wexford District Court on Monday, December 9, via video link.
Meanwhile, Mr Cummings requested that Mr Al Tamimi receive medical attention.
Judge Staunton has granted a psychological evaluation and an Arabic translator has been requested for his appearance on Monday.
