Fascinating photos show early days at Liverpool shopping centre

Must read

This year marks 35 years since Clayton Square Shopping Centre officially opened – and these fascinating photographs offer a glimpse into its early days. It was back in 1989 that a host of new stores first came to Clayton Square Shopping Centre and with that customers from across the city and beyond shopped there for the first time.

Through the years, we’ve seen huge brands like Tammy Girl, Disney and Oasis open on-site and the likes of Boots call Clayton Square home for decades. At one point, the second level was home to a café, toilets and an internet café.

In 2014, a makeover transformed the centre into a single trading mall, with the removal of escalators opening it up. But these images, courtesy of our archive Mirrorpix, show what the site looked like in its early days. Unseen for years, they capture the shopping centre being constructed, as well as its nearing competition and official opening to the public.

Some photos also show businesses and shoppers inside, as well as famous faces who visited. Taken between 1986 and 1993, these photos are bound to stir some memories.
