Facebook, Instagram, and Threads have recovered after a massive outage

Must read

A bunch of Meta apps experienced major issues on Wednesday. When the outage first happened at around 1PM ET, for many staffers at The Verge, apps like Facebook and Instagram weren’t loading or showed older posts. However, Meta now says that things have recovered (or are basically all the way there).

During the worst of the outages, Downdetector had big and sudden spikes for Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, indicating a lot of people had been affected outages. The Instagram Downdetector page, for example, showed a peak of more than 66,000 reports of issues with the platform. The Facebook peak exceeded 83,000.

Meta acknowledged issues on (ironically) X shortly before 2PM ET. But a few hours later, The company said that things were, for the most part, fixed.

“Thanks for bearing with us!” Meta wrote at 5:26PM ET. “We’re 99% of the way there — just doing some last checks. We apologize to those who’ve been affected by the outage.”

“Andddd we’re back — sorry for the wait, and thanks for bearing with us,” Instagram said at 6:02PM ET.

This big outage follows another large Meta outage from March that took down Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Meta also saw a major outage affecting Instagram and Facebook in October 2022.

Update, December 11th: Added Meta and Instagram comments.
