The fast fashion company Primark has set an opening date for its first-ever Virginia location.
The Ireland-based clothing retailer announced today that it will open a 35,000-square-foot store in Tysons Corner Center on July 16. The store will occupy a two-story space that belonged to L.L. Bean for over two decades until its closure in January 2022.
This will be Primark’s second location in the D.C. area, following an opening at Arundel Mills in Hanover, Maryland, in September 2023. Additional stores in the region are planned at Potomac Mills in Woodbridge and the Mall at Prince George’s in Hyattsville, Maryland.
“After a successful Arundel Mills opening, we’ve seen a growing demand for more Primark stores across the DMV area and especially in the Washington, D.C. metro area,” Primark U.S. President Kevin Tulip said in a press release. “We’re ready to open our doors in Tysons to bring ‘Primania’ to even more US shoppers, with many Virginia shoppers able to explore the store for the first time.”
Started under the name Penneys in Dublin, Ireland, in 1969, Primark is now one of Europe’s largest fashion chains with over 400 stores across 14 countries. It began expanding to the U.S. in 2015 with a goal of hitting 60 stores in America and 530 stores worldwide by 2026.
With the Tysons Corner Center store, Primark will reach 25 U.S. stores across 10 states.
Known for its low prices, Primark and other fast fashion companies that seek to sell clothes cheaply and quickly have faced scrutiny for practices that detractors say create waste and rely on labor exploitation.
Primark works with suppliers in Europe, Asia and Africa, according to its website. The company launched a “Primark Cares” campaign in 2021 that included pledges to follow sustainable and ethical practices, including a commitment to make all clothes from recyclable or “sustainably sourced” materials by 2030.
