Portugal’s 3-0 win over Turkey at Euro 2024 was repeatedly interrupted by pitch invaders and a post-match incident saw striker Goncalo Ramos accidentally taken out by a steward
Goncalo Ramos was wiped out by a steward attempting to tackle a pitch invader after Portugal beat Turkey at Euro 2024.
Portugal produced a dominant performance to beat Turkey 3-0 in Dortmund and book their place in the last 16 with a game to spare. Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes were both on target for Roberto Martinez’s men, while Samet Akaydin scored a comical own goal.
However, the game was repeatedly interrupted by pitch invaders, with the first incident seeing a young boy run onto the field and pose for a selfie with Cristiano Ronaldo. That sparked a series of copycats who also ran onto the field to try and take a photo with Ronaldo.
The 39-year-old appeared to get more irritated with each attempt, with fans continuing to run on the pitch after the final whistle had blown. And fellow striker Ramos was taken out by a steward who slipped over while trying to stop yet another pitch invader.
The steward accidentally wiped out an unsuspecting Ramos, who was left limping as a result of the incident. And Portugal boss Roberto Martinez admitted he was worried about the safety of his players after the repeated pitch invasions.
“It is a concern because today we were lucky that the intentions of the fans were good,” he told reporters. “We all love a fan who recognises the big stars and the big icons in their life. We all agree with that.
“But there is a very, very difficult moments if those intentions are wrong – the players are exposed and we need to be careful with that. I don’t think that should happen on a football pitch.
“There is a lot of security and a lot of protection and it should not happen. And probably we should give a message to the fans that it’s not right way; you’re not going to get anything out of it and probably the measures will get worse for the future.
“It’s not good to have the players so exposed when people are running on the pitch.” However, goalscorer Bernardo was far less concerned, explaining: “It’s just a bit annoying in terms of always having to stop the game because a fan enters the pitch.
“But I think that’s the price you pay for being so recognised in the world of football and having a player like him with us. But in terms of feeling in danger, I don’t think so, no. Not me personally at least.”
