Euro 2024 gets underway in Munich when Germany take on Scotland on Friday evening but with fan zones across the country, a suspicious object has been located in Berlin
Police have cordoned off an area of a Euro 2024 fan zone after a suspicious object was located in Berlin.
The object was found at Scheidemannstrasse entrance in Berlin, Germany next to the Reichstag building. The area has been declared as unavailable to supporters by Polizei Berlin Einsatz.
Beate Ostertag, spokeswoman for the Berlin police, announced: “A restricted area has been set up for safety reasons. The baggage is now being examined. It could also be that someone did not take it into the fan zone.”
The German capital sees its first match on Saturday as Spain and Croatia face-off in their Group B clash. The Olympiastadion will play host to the significant clash in the competition’s second day.
The city will be home to six matches over the next month including the final. In addition to the clash between Spain and Croatia, Poland vs Austria and Netherlands vs Austria will take place in the capital before the knockout stages.
The tournament is due to get underway on Friday evening in Munich when Scotland take on hosts Germany, as supporters from across Europe flood the country. The nation is set to see its work cut out across the country.
Earlier this week, Munich saw arrests as violence broke out in Marienplatz with a scuffle seeing chairs and stein glasses thrown at a group of Scotland supporters. A number of arrests were made in the aftermath.
Overall, jubilant scenes have been seen around Germany with the Tartan Army in a celebratory mood in Munich. Scotland have never beaten their hosts in a competitive fixture and come into the tournament with one win in their last nine matches.
Their spirits have not been dampened with tens of thousands of fans making the trip to cheer on their heroes. Supporters will take in the fixture from the likes of fan zones in Berlin, even if they have not made the trip to the Allianz Arena in Munich.
Security is expected to be tight across the country with England’s group opener against Serbia has already been deemed as a “high risk fixture “.
