What next for Ten Hag after keeping Man Utd job

Erik ten Hag is close to agreeing a new two-year contract with Manchester United worth around £27million.

Ten Hag, who was given the green light to continue as United boss earlier this month, has agreed in principle to the new contract extension.

The new deal will keep Ten Hag, who had one year left on his existing £9million-a-year contract, at United until 2027. United and Ten Hag’s representatives are understood to be finalising the terms of the new deal, which should be confirmed this week.

Part of the new deal will include a shake-up of United’s coaching staff, with former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy set to return to the club as part of Ten Hag’s backroom team.

Van Nistelrooy was among the candidates to succeed Vincent Kompany at Burnley but is understood to have turned them down to take on the coaching role at United.

Ten Hag was left in limbo for two-and-a-half weeks, after guiding United to a stunning 2-1 FA Cup final triumph over local rivals Manchester City at Wembley, which also clinched a Europa League place.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his new football executive team conducted an end-of-season review, which included them sounding out potential successors to Ten Hag.

They included former Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Paris St Germain boss Thomas Tuchel, who ultimately ruled himself out of the running to replace Ten Hag.
