Erik ten Hag has moved closer to signing a new contract at Manchester United following positive talks with the club.

Ten Hag will enter the final 12 months of his current three-year deal next week, and United’s co-owners Ineos have offered the Dutchman new terms after deciding to keep him as manager following an end-of-season review.

Sources say agreeing Ten Hag’s new contract is a priority but insist that nothing has been finalised yet.

Despite some modifications to his role at Old Trafford, it’s understood there will not be a great deal of change and Ten Hag will still retain the title of manager.

Speaking on Dutch TV last week after United officials flew to his holiday base in Ibiza to tell him he was keeping his job, Ten Hag said: ‘Manchester United and I still have to find an agreement for the new contract. This isn’t easily done, we are still going to have to talk about this.’

The 54-year-old is set to be joined by his Dutch compatriot Ruud van Nistelrooy as the former United striker continues talks over a return to Old Trafford as a coach.

Van Nistelrooy has held talks with Burnley over the managerial vacancy at Turf Moor created by Vincent Kompany’s move to Bayern Munich, but is said to be excited over the prospect of rejoining United.

The former PSV Eindhoven boss would be handed a senior role on Ten Hag’s coaching staff if he decides to return, which could have implications for current assistants Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren, or forwards coach Benni McCarthy.
