Roy not too Keane on Gareth comments

Roy Keane was left unconvinced by Gareth Southgate’s latest comments on the state of the England squad, writes Emilia Hawkins.

But in his latest press conference he insisted there is a new “buzz” in the squad.

However, Manchester United legend Keane – who has been working for ITV Sport throughout the Euros – was not convinced by Southgate’s collected response.

He said: “He’s talking about enjoying it – he doesn’t look like he’s enjoying this!

“I suppose so [he wants to get on with the next match] yeah.

“But if he’s talking about the group enjoying it, my kids always say to me ‘are you happy?’ and I always say ‘yeah’ but then they say ‘let your face know!’

“It’s unlike Gareth. We’ve praised Gareth many times over the years.

“And again we go back to people who are criticising the tactics, the decisions and whatever, that’s always going to be there.

“I think Gareth is big enough and ugly enough to deal with that stuff.”

Southgate mixes things up

England are set to mix things up against Switzerland.

Is it to match the Swiss formation? Is it Marc Guehi’s absence? Is it because Gareth Southgate is finally listening to critics?

It could be all of the above.

This is how we expect the Three Lions to line up.

Southgate reaches 100 games in charge

Gareth Southgate was the accidental England manager who ended up as his nation’s longest-serving and most successful boss in half a century.

And so naturally, he will reach his landmark 100th match in charge as the target of intense wide-ranging criticism and social-media ridicule.

Such is the nature of “The impossible job’”. The second-most important role in the country, after the resident of 10 Downing Street.

Southgate has outlasted four prime ministers but he’s currently as unpopular as the Tories.

Not since Alf Ramsey has an England boss notched up a century of games in charge and not since Sir Alf have the Three Lions reached a major final or impressed at three consecutive tournaments.

And yet, as Southgate prepares for a Euros quarter-final against Switzerland this weekend, the vast majority of the nation have long since turned against him.

Stars in England shirts

Some big sports stars have been seen getting in the mood for England this week.

F1 star George Russell arrived at Silverstone ahead of the British Grand Prix wearing a Three Lions shirt.

Meanwhile, tennis star Emma Raducanu was seen training in an England shirt before her fourth round match tomorrow. She was forced to pull out of her mixed doubles with Andy Murray after reporting wrist discomfort.
