Collins says the word of the year is “brat” but I disagree. Is brat, as in confident and hedonistic, really going to hang around for long? Feels fly-by-night. Indeed, picking “brat” was rather “brat” of Collins. You do not need to be Poirot to deduce that these lists are all about getting down with the “kidz”.
This year, all ten months of it, has not felt brat so much as war-torn, on so many fronts. But, in fairness to brat, though fairness probably isn’t something that is very brat, its competitors were more ridiculous. Collins burbled on about “supermajority”, “looksmaxxing” and “romantasy”. Really?
Last year’s word was AI, which isn’t even a word unless you count ai, which is a three-toed sloth, but at least
