Edinburgh passengers heading south of the border were urged “not to travel” on Thursday morning.
Avanti West Coast warned of heavy flooding, which has blocked the line in both directions between Carlisle and Lockerbie. They added: “Do not attempt to travel with us between Preston and Scotland.”
Passengers who purchased tickets were told they would be able to claim to refund. ScotRail added that those travelling should check their journeys ahead of time.

Taking to X/Twitter, Avanti West Coast said: “Do not travel north of Preston. Services between Preston and Glasgow/Edinburgh have been cancelled due to heavy flooding on the railway between Carlisle and Lockerbie blocking the line in both directions.
“Please do not attempt to travel with us between Preston and Scotland. Customers travelling between Preston and Glasgow/Edinburgh with tickets dated Weds 22 or Thurs 23 May can use these for travel tomorrow, Friday 24 May, on any Avanti West Coast service via the same route.”

Avanti also confirmed that customers who did not travel, but had already purchased tickets, would be able to claim a refund.
On Thursday morning, ScotRail added: “Travelling today? The Met Office yellow weather warnings for heavy rain are still in place for much of the country. Don’t forget to check your journey on our app or website. You may want to dig out the winter coat that you put away, and your brolly too. Roll on summer!”
