In a video shared online, brave locals try to intervene at Leith’s Newkirkgate Shopping Centre. The incident at around 1.15pm on Monday, June 3, is believed to have involved a pug and a larger dog.

At one point, four people can be seen trying to pry the pets apart. In disturbing footage, one of the animals is audibly in distress.

One heroic shop worker from a nearby store brings a chair to help separate the two of them. She wedged the seat in the middle of the dogs and then managed to grab the smaller pooch.

The pharmacist worker said: “People in the shop started screaming. I turned around and my colleague was filming something. When I saw what was happening, I knew I had to do something. That’s when I grabbed the chair to put between them. Just to do something.”

She continued: “The owner’s lead came off the pug so I grabbed the poor wee thing and managed to get it off of the large dog.”

She added: “I took it inside and closed the door. The pug must have needed stitches there were injuries everywhere on it. The owner and the dog stayed inside for about 20 minutes, they were both visibly shaken. I am just glad the wee thing is safe”

Once the small dog was safely inside, two men were seen holding the large dog down before it was led away.

Police officers said there were no reports of anyone being injured during the altercation. Officers added both owners of the dogs were traced and advice was given to each of them.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1.15 pm on Monday, 3 June 2024 officers were made aware a dog had bitten another dog in the Newkirkgate area of Edinburgh.

“There were no reports of anyone being injured during the incident. The owners of both dogs were traced and appropriate advice given.”
