Eco-chic extravaganza as Petroc fashion show unites for a sustainable future

A vibrant display of eco-conscious fashion and community spirit took centre stage at Tiverton Petroc on May 23.

The event, which began as a modest fashion show, evolved into a full-scale celebration of sustainability, featuring local bands, the Unnamed Art Society, Sustainable Tiverton, and China Grove.

Karen Coleman, a lecturer at Petroc, shared the inspiration behind the event: “We wanted to work with the local community, so we visited Refurbish, which is a shop in town, all about sustainability, which is our ethos here at the college. It started off as a small fashion show, and then it grew. We got the band, we’ve got the Unnamed Art Society and Sustainable Tiverton involved along with China Glow which is absolutely amazing. So it’s just all falling into place.”

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the student-designed fashion show. “The students designed all their own costumes based on sustainability, using that material, and then they researched some facts, and dubbed it over music to provide the voiceover,” Coleman explained. This innovative approach not only showcased the students’ creativity but also underscored the critical message of sustainability.

Coleman emphasised the dual purpose of the event: “The message is to promote sustainability and, more importantly, to promote Petroc Tiverton, which is a great campus that needs to be supported. So we’re hoping to work with more of the local communities and everyone who gets involved.”
