DVLA issues £1,000 warning to drivers ahead of new number plate rules

Must read

GOV.UK explains: “Number plates (also known as licence plates) must show your registration number correctly. You cannot rearrange letters or numbers, or alter them so that they’re hard to read.”

According to the specialists, the vehicle registration number format was introduced back in 2001 and should be followed at all times.

Two letters must refer to the region or country the model was first issued. Meanwhile, a further two numbers will show when a vehicle was first registered.

Finally, the last three letters of the design can be chosen at random as long as a certain combination has not been banned.

Number plates must also be made from a reflective material and not have a background pattern.

The front design must display black characters on a white background with the rear showing black characters on a yellow background.

All number plates must be marked to show who supplied it and issued a British Standard number.

Characters must not be removable or reflective while plates fitted after September 2021 must be in a single shade of black.

Failing to follow the rules could see motorists caught out and slapped with penalties which would dampen the excitement of the new number plate launches.

Drivers have also been urged to stay vigilant with certain number plate designs that are liable to be targeted by thieves.

GOV.UK added: “You can get theft-resistant number plates – these make it harder for someone to remove them from your vehicle quickly and reuse them. Ask your local car dealer or registered number plate supplier for more information.”
