DVLA announces plans for massive driving licence rules shake-up in months

The DVLA has confirmed plans to launch a new online tool in months which will offer motorists an extra driving licence service from the comfort of their own homes. 

Officials will introduce the ‘share my driving licence’ service through their online Driver and Vehicles account service in March 2025. 

The new software will allow customers to generate share codes within their account which may be needed by some firms. 

Driving licence information may be requested by car insurance companies or even when applying for a job.

This will allow firms to quickly check a motorist’s driving record and their licence expiry date. 

Information such as how many penalty points individuals may have, any disqualifications, and a list of vehicles the individual is permitted to drive is listed. 

Writing in their 2024/25 Business Plan, the DVLA said: “This year, we will introduce a new ‘Share my licence’ service through the account. 

“This will allow customers to generate a share code, which can be used for a variety of purposes including to confirm licence information for car hire companies.”

Motorists can currently obtain a check code online or by contacting the DVLA’s head office in Swansea. 

To obtain a check code, motorists will need to provide their driving licence number, National Insurance number and the postcode listed on their photocard.

The DVLA is also aiming to exceed its 90% target for digital and automated interactions this year.

DVLA Chief Executive and Accounting Officer Julie Lennard stressed the DVLA was still committed to encouraging road users to try out digital online services. 

She commented: “We want our customers to be able to access our multi-channel services as quickly and easily as possible. 

“Our many digital services are extremely popular with our customers.

“In the last reporting year, we dealt with 95.5 million individual customer transactions, 84% of which were processed through our digital channels. 

“Digital is an area we continue to focus on, and over the last year, we have continued to invest time and effort into building the right IT operating model to ensure that we have the right structure to continuously improve our digital services.”
