Dick Van Dyke, 98, looks sprightly as he reunites with Carol Burnett, 91, at her VERY star-studded Hand and Footprint Ceremony in Hollywood

Must read

Dick Van Dyke supported his old friend Carol Burnett at her very star-studded Hand and Footprint Ceremony, which was held at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on Thursday.

At 98, the Mary Poppins alum is only seven years older than the Palm Royale actress, and both national treasures are only an Oscar away from elite EGOT status.

Dick walked on to the red carpet about 26 minutes into the event and, when his cane accidentally fell to the ground, he wisecracked, ‘Help!’ to the laughing crowd.

Van Dyke could also be heard telling the crowd, ‘I’m the only person who ever punched her in the stomach’ – perhaps an inside joke, which made Carol giggle.

‘My first memory of working with Dick dates back to the late 1950s when we were both panelists on a show called Pantomime Quiz, which was a game show based on charades,’ Burnett wrote in her 2016 memoir In Such Good Company.

‘We didn’t actually perform together. Our paths crossed often over the years that followed, and we finally got to work together when we traded guest shots. He was a guest on my show, and I was a guest on his wonderful variety show, Van Dyke and Company.’

In 1976, the white-haired triple threat agreed to replace Harvey Korman on the legendary comedian’s CBS variety show The Carol Burnett Show, but it didn’t work out as he only appeared in 13 episodes.

But there were no hard feelings as Dick and Carol – who also worked together on CBS’ The Garry Moore Show in 1960 – co-starred in a play called Same Time Next Year at an LA theater in 1977.

Last year, Burnett appeared on his CBS special Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic and Van Dyke appeared on her NBC special Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.

The four-time great-grandfather certainly still had a spring in his step despite wearing no shoes over his black socks and he was dressed in a tweed blazer, white button-up shirt sans tie, and grey pleated trousers.

Dick was joined at his seat by his second wife of 13 years – Arlene Silver – who, at 52, is 46 years younger than him.

Van Dyke originally met the Bronx-born, LA-raised singer when she was applying his make-up at the 13th Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2007 where he presented Julie Andrews with a lifetime achievement award.

The Days of Our Lives guest star has pretty good genes considering his own mother Hazel passed away, age 95, in 1994 and he smoked for 50 years.

Carol – who beamed as she placed her hands in the wet cement – grew up at Yucca and Wilcox just a few blocks East of what as formerly known as Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, and she and her grandmother Mabel ‘Mae’ Jones used to ‘look at all the footprints and handprints of all these great movie stars.’

Burnett pulled a funny face as she was lifted off the block by two men after placing her black patent leather pumps into the wet cement.

‘We were poor, but we would occasionally come here to the Chinese,’ the Texan-born, Hollywood-raised star recalled of her childhood.

‘It was first-run so it was more expensive than second-run theaters, but we come in we’d see a Betty Grable movie. And then before we’d leave, my grandmother said, “Well, let’s let’s hit the ladies’ room, so we would go in there and steal all the toilet paper. And she said, “We’ll be set for another month!”‘

Carol – who used to signal her ‘Nanny’ nightly by tugging at her ear on the air – concluded her acceptance speech by saying: ‘If my grandmother is somehow floating around here today I know she is as amazed and thrilled as I am and I thank you, thank you all so very much love you.’

Jimmy Kimmel Live! host Jimmy Kimmel had the honor of emceeing Burnett’s ceremony, which was convenient considering his studio, El Capitan Entertainment Center, is located across the street.

‘Today we are honoring you with what is probably the most, I think, celebrated lifetime achievement award of all – two wet fists full of concrete and two ruined shoes!’ the 56-year-old Emmy-winning producer joked at the podium.

‘The afterparty is at Wahlburgers across the street!’
