Manchester United and Manchester City will renew their rivalry as soon as August 10 following the former’s 2-1 win in Saturday’s FA Cup final at Wembley.
United raced into a two-goal lead by half-time after goals from youngsters Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. Garnacho opened the scoring with 30 minutes on the clock, pouncing on a City defensive blunder, before Mainoo added a second nine minutes later.
City cranked up the pressure after the interval and did pull a goal back in the closing stages through Jeremy Doku. The substitute’s effort from outside the box was not dealt with by Andre Onana at his near post.

United, however, held on to secure their first FA Cup crown since 2016, securing a second trophy in as many seasons under Erik ten Hag. It also ended City’s hopes of winning the double, following their recent success in the Premier League.
As a result, United and City will go head-to-head again at the beginning of next season, facing each other at Wembley in early August in the Community Shield. The annual curtain-raiser sees the winners of the Premier League meet the winners of the FA Cup.
Had City come out on top on Saturday afternoon, they would have faced Arsenal for the second season running. Arsenal faced City and beat them at Wembley last August after finishing second in the Premier League last term.
It will almost certainly mark City’s and United’s final outing ahead of the beginning of the 2024/25 Premier League season. The campaign is scheduled to kick off over the weekend of August 17 and 18.
United last featured in the Community Shield in 2016, beating Leicester City 2-1. City, meanwhile, have featured in each of the last three, losing all of them.
The last all-Manchester Community Shield contest was back in 2011 and United came from 2-0 down to win 3-2. Nani netted a brace, including a 94th-minute winner.
