Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool squad enjoyed a post-season party as the Reds boss said goodbye after eight-and-a-half years in charge and their final day win over Wolves
Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez was in celebratory mood at their end-of-season party – a matter of hours after looking extremely downtrodden during Jurgen Klopp’s farewell guard of honour.
Klopp managed his 491st and final game in charge of the Reds as they ran out 2-0 winners over Wolves at Anfield on Sunday. Goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Jarell Quansah earned Liverpool their 24th Premier League victory of the season to end the campaign in third on 82 points.
It was a perfect send off for the departing Klopp, who walked through a guard of honour after finishing his final game at the helm. The entire Liverpool squad and staff gathered in two lines and clapped as Klopp walked through twice – apart from one player: Nunez.
He also appeared to duck behind Luis Diaz as the German walked past him, sparking a fierce reaction from some fans as they questioned why Nunez avoided clapping Klopp.
Klopp delivered an emotional speech to the Liverpool supporters. The German then saved some special words for his players when they headed back to the dressing room as he expressed his extreme affection for his squad.
After that, the Liverpool players got ready and went back to the Titanic Hotel – the same place the team set off for the final match of the season – before going out and partying. Paddy Pimblett, Kenny Dalglish and John Barnes were among those to join in with the celebrations for the outgoing Klopp.
And despite not clapping Klopp when he went through his guard of honour, Nunez appeared to cut a delighted figure when the squad went out partying. A video shared on social media showed the Uruguayan joining in with the fun and patting Klopp on the back while he was in the middle of the circle.
It looked a real celebratory atmosphere and Nunez was getting involved with the rest of the Liverpool squad, with Mac Allister, Kostas Tsimikas and Stefan Bajetic among those pictured on the night out. Footage also emerged showing Klopp dancing alongside Barnes to his famous Anfield rap.
Klopp cut an emotional figure as he delivered his post-match speech to the Liverpool players. As per footage caught by the club, he said: “I love you, that’s what I can say. The football you are able to play is absolutely ridiculous. I can’t wait to be watching you, developing, making next steps…
“Coming third, I don’t even know yet who became champion,” to which a voice replied “City”. Klopp continued: “Well, the only ones who stopped them do that was us [in 2019-20], and you can do that again. There might be some people who say [third place] is not enough – I tell you, they don’t have a clue about football.
“Could we have had better moments? Yes, of course, that’s always possible. But did we do better than you can usually expect? Oh yes, because it takes longer to become a top team again.
“And you did that [clicks] like this and that’s why expectations go [up gesture] like this and then we couldn’t keep the pace. That’s the problem a little bit.”
