Danniella Westbrook ‘couldn’t be prouder’ as she celebrates her son Kai’s engagement and admits ‘true love really does exist’

Danniella Westbrook said she ‘couldn’t be prouder’ on Sunday as she celebrated her son Kai’s engagement. 

The actress, 50, gushed that her son, 27, and his bride-to-be Sophie proved that ‘true love really does exist.’

Danniella shares Kai with her former boyfriend Robert Fernandez. She also has a daughter Jodie, 23, with her second husband Kevin Jenkins. 

In a series of photos shared to his Instagram, Kai wrote: ‘I had a beautiful time with some beautiful people! had a great engagement party.’

Danniella commented: ‘Best day ever for me. Seeing you happy and seeing you and Sophie make it official. I couldn’t be a prouder kid.’

The former EastEnders star continued: ‘What a fantastic day and memories. Here’s to both of you and a lifetime of making memories, happiness, and adventure. True love really does exist.’

Kai and Danniella have been open about the ins and outs of their relationship in the past. 

Back in 2018, Kai told how he forgives his mother for her substance struggles, specifically when she took cocaine while pregnant with him in 1996, in an interview with Daily Star.

Kai confessed he’s ‘anti-drugs’ after seeing the effects of addiction with his the former soap star.  

Kai expressed his shock in discovering his mother was taking cocaine while pregnant, but insisted that he ‘likes to forgive’.

He said: ‘It’s shocking. It hasn’t affected me. It’s a miracle. I like to forgive, everyone deserves another chance.’ 

Danniella’s only son expressed his opinion on drugs, stating: ‘I’m anti-drugs. I don’t touch them. I don’t take sleeping tablets or even paracetamol. I don’t drink alcohol. I don’t do stuff that isn’t natural.’

Revealing he was forced to ‘grow up a lot quicker’ than the average child, Kai shared his fears over losing the actress as he has ‘no-one else in the world.’

‘I worry about her health a lot, it’s frightening because I don’t have anyone else in this world’, he said. 

In January 2018, Kai went on television with Danniella to tell her how proud he was of her. 

Sharing a note he’d written to his mum, Kai said on Loose Women: ‘Mum, I know you’ve made mistakes but who hasn’t?

‘I’m super proud of you, you’re only human. I know a lot of people have always put you down but I know you’ve always had the confidence to get back up.

‘I’m always gonna be there for you no matter what. You’re also a big inspiration to me but at the same time can be a huge aggravation to me. I love you loads.’

Later that summer, Danniella got Kai’s inked on her wrist with a crown, saying it was a mark of love and loyalty to her son after the troubled times they’ve experienced in the past years, with her son seeing her through the worst of her drug addiction.

Beside the inking, Danniella already has the words ‘Family First’ and it sits beside a tribute to her daughter Jodie, which she had done in September 2014.

She said at the time it proves that her relationship with her son is stronger than ever, following years of tough times in the spotlight. 

However, while Danniella and Kai are on great terms, last summer, Daniella’s daughter Jodie hit back at fans on Instagram who told her to reach out to her mother after she blocked her on Instagram.

Jodie took to Instagram to share a birthday snap after she celebrated her 22nd birthday and was hit with a team of fans urging her to contact Danniella to resolve their issues.

Despite the former EastEnders star previously posting a dig at her daughter , Jodie handled the situation with grace as she politely asked the fans to not comment.

One person commented: ‘Reach out to your mum. She loves and misses you, life is too short’

Jodie swiftly replied back: ‘If you don’t know the situation please don’t comment, thank you❤️’

It came just days after the actress revealed she is ‘heartbroken’ over her daughter’s decision to ‘cut her out of her life’. 

Alongside several throwback snaps of Jodie, Danniella wrote: ‘With all my heat, I miss my daughter. Miss so many things we shared. But after the beautiful birthday, I arranged for her 21st last year. Within a month, I was once again with zero explanation cut out of her life.’

She added: ‘And it has broken my heart but I just hope she knows how proud I am to be her mother. And I love her always . X’

Her first marriage was to van driver Ben Morgan in 1998, but they divorced nine months later.

In 2001, the star married businessman Kevin, almost four months after the birth of their daughter Jodie. The former couple divorced in 2020.

Danniella most recently split from jailbird boyfriend David after a seven-year on-off relationship – just months before he is due to be released from prison.
