Dame Maggie Smith’s final photo shoot before her death was fittingly iconic.
The celebrated actress was featured in the October 2023 issue of Vogue, posing for the luxury fashion brand Loewe.
Smith, who died on Friday at age 89, was photographed looking demurely into the camera while wearing a giant fuzzy coat and holding a Loewe’s “signature Puzzle bag.”
In other images, shot by Juergen Teller, the “Harry Potter” star wore a turtleneck dress and ruffled skirt while clasping a Paseo bag.
Smith’s two sons announced her death on Friday morning.
“It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” her sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, wrote in a statement.
“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September,” the siblings, whom Smith shared with ex-husband Robert Stephens, continued. “An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end.
“She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” they added. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.”
The siblings concluded the statement by thanking Smith’s fans and asking for “privacy at this time.”
Smith had an extensive career on stage and screen that spanned seven decades.
She won two Academy Awards for her roles in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and “California Suite,” four Emmy Awards, a Tony Award and a raft of British acting awards.
Other movies she starred in include “Sister Act,” “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Hook,” “A Room with a View” and “Death on the Nile.”
In later years, she amassed new generations of fans with her portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the “Harry Potter” film franchise.
She also delighted audiences for her role as Violet Crawley in the British period drama “Downton Abbey.”
Smith was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth in 1990.
