Cushing’s disease made fitness fanatic gain 7.5 stone

Must read

A 33-year-old woman who was treated for Cushing’s disease has described how she gained seven and a half stone in 12 months and is urging people to stop treating it as a rare condition.

Micheala Nugent from north Dublin said her life was “totally changed” by the disease, which occurs when the body makes too much cortisol — a hormone related to the body’s stress response — and is often caused by an adrenal gland tumour. The pituitary disorder is progressive, meaning that without treatment it gets worse over time.

Amy Schumer, the American actress, revealed she had Cushing’s syndrome in February after receiving high doses of steroid injections. Cushing’s syndrome can also be caused by high-dose use of herbal supplements.
