Cheryl Murray, best known for appearing on Coronation Street as Suzie, passed away at the age of 71 last year.

She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was forced to retire from acting aged 46 due to the illness.

ITV said in a statement: “We are saddened to hear of the recent passing of Cheryl Murray, our thoughts are with her family and friends.

“Her vibrant portrayal of Gail’s best friend and Elsie Tanner’s lodger Suzie Birchall lived on in the memories of Coronation Street fans long after Suzie left the cobbles for the bright lights of London.”

As well as the ITV soap, she appeared in Emmerdale and also the classic 80s sitcoms Sorry! and Hi-Di-Hi!

She sadly experienced her first MS attack whilst working on Coronation Street.

Many soap fans have reacted to her death on social media with a number of touching tributes.

One fan said: “Coronation Street star Cheryl Murray passed away in 2023? I had no idea. What sad news. As Suzie Birchall, she was a fantastic addition to the #Corrie cast; Suzie’s friendship with Gail Potter (as she was before marrying Brian Tilsley) was a real treat.”

A second person typed: “Sorry to hear that Cheryl Murray has passed away, and such a pity we only find out over a year later. I’ve not been a big fan of Corrie for a long time, but when I was she was one of the main reasons. RIP.”

A third chimed in: “Really sad news that Cheryl Murray passed away last year, but it’s taken until now for us to have noticed. Those early days with her and Helen Worth were brilliant. A breath of fresh air on the street.”
