Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso recently arrived in Moscow to meet President Vladimir Putin in a bid to strengthen his country’s tie with Russia. His trip comes less than a month after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s recent visit to Congo during his tour of West Africa. During his meeting with his Russian counterpart, he will discuss economic, trade, energy, and security cooperation matters. This marks his second trip to Russia within a year as he was in attendance at the Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg last July. Congo remains a strong ally of Moscow with a bevy of Russian companies operating in the country across its oil, mining, and military sectors. Recently, Russia has worked hard to enhance relations with African nations, which maintain a neutral stance on the Ukraine war, in a bid to circumvent western sanctions that were placed on it for its invasion of Ukraine.
