Coldplay fans have been treated to an early surprise with Chris Martin making an appearance on Grafton Street on Wednesday evening.

A huge crowd began to gather on Grafton Street when rumours began to spread that an appearance could be in store.

Martin was joined by Nigerian singer Burna Boy, Argentine singer Tini, Palestinian-Chilean singer Elyanna and English rapper Little Simz, who all feature on Coldplay’s new single We Pray.

The group played the song five times together before departing. There was a heavy garda presence and a video crew on hand to capture the performance. The performance is set to be used for the song’s music video.

“Thank you for listening to the same song five times and see you tomorrow,” Martin told the crowd following the surprise appearance.

Fans on Grafton Street noted that Martin had arrived barefoot.

Coldplay are set to play Croke Park this Thursday, followed by three more dates at the venue on Friday, Sunday and next Monday.

Martin was spotted in Dun Laoghaire following his arrival to Ireland this week and stopped to chat with fans and local busker Gerry Cowen, who has played the banjo on Dun Laoghaire pier for a number of years.

This week will be the first time Coldplay have played in Ireland since 2017 with demand for tickets for their Music of the Spheres tour extremely high.

Tickets for all four nights at Croke Park have long been sold out since they went on sale last year.
