Chinese workers killed in backlash against Beijing’s Belt and Road

A separatist suicide bomber in Pakistan has killed two Chinese workers and injured at least ten more people in the latest in a series of deadly attacks aimed at sabotaging Beijing’s efforts to establish a new strategic port in the country.

At least seven vehicles were destroyed when a car bomb exploded next to a convoy escorting newly arrived Chinese engineers and investors, close to the international airport of the city of Karachi. One other Chinese citizen was among the injured.

The victims were travelling to the Port Qasim electric power plant, one of various joint ventures between Pakistan and China, as part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a massive programme of international construction designed to expand Chinese influence in strategically significant parts
