China has angrily denied accusations from Washington that hackers linked to its government were behind a computer security breach at the US Treasury, calling the claims “groundless”.
On Monday the Treasury announced that state-sponsored Chinese hackers had accessed workstations and viewed documents, in the latest apparent state-backed cyberattack on American targets.
Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for the foreign ministry in Bejing, denied the claims on Tuesday morning. “We have stated our position many times regarding such groundless accusations that lack evidence,” said, adding that China “has always opposed all forms of hacker attacks”.
In a letter to Congress detailing the latest security scare, the US Treasury said that it had been informed of the breach on December 8.
