King Charles paid a touching tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II as he attended the King’s Birthday Parade at Horse Guards Parade in central London on Saturday.
The King, accompanied by Queen Camilla, rode through Whitehall from Buckingham Palace before saluting and inspecting the troops of the Household Division and the King’s Troops.
While he would traditionally ride to the parade on a horse, Charles’s doctors advised him to ride a carriage to avoid putting undue pressure on his body as he continues to undergo treatment for cancer.
The King opted to head to the Trooping the Colour ceremony on the Scottish State Coach – a choice that paid a subtle tribute to his late mother.
The coach was featured in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Parade as Elizabeth II selected it to ride to and from the ceremony that year.
Reviewing footage of the event, lip reader Nicola Hinckley claimed Charles made a touching admission as he rode past the crowds to the ceremony.
According to the expert, the King told Camilla: “Oh dear, I don’t know why I’m feeling rather tearful.”
As he later was joined by the rest of the Royal Family on the Buckingham Palace balcony, he also appeared to say: “It’s amazing the amount of people who made it.”
