England’s Euro 2024 group fixture against Denmark is expected to be played under a closed roof due to bad weather conditions.
UEFA are wary of the weather conditions ahead of the Group C clash on Thursday 20 June at 5pm, which will be live on talkSPORT.
The roof of the Waldstadion has been shut for now with Denmark’s players due to train on the pitch on Wednesday evening.
With bad weather already having plagued Euro 2024, UEFA are anticipating similar conditions on Thursday.
A severe weather warning was issued across the western and central regions of Germany on Wednesday.
A number of fanzones across Dortmund, Dusseldorf and Gelsenkirchen were all closed due to the harsh conditions.
Cologne also acted in accordance with the weather, as organisers released a statement explaining their actions.
It read: “Due to an official storm warning from late morning with expected heavy rain, hail and heavy gusts of wind, all events and functions of the Host City Cologne associated with the European Championships have to be cancelled for today.
“The necessary talks with the security partners were already held yesterday evening and the preparatory measures to secure the venues were initiated. The decision to cancel all events was made on Tuesday morning after further consultation with the German Weather Service.”
Meteorologist Dominik Jung told German outlet BILD there had even been a potential ‘risk to life’ and that the closures were necessary to protect against every eventuality.
“There is a risk to life,” he advised, speaking ahead of the fixtures that took place two days before England‘s clash. “We don’t currently know every place that could get hit, but we do know the region where something could happen.
“People will complain again: ‘We didn’t have anything.’ But better safe than sorry.”
When Gareth Southgate‘s side take to the pitch, they will be in search of their second win of the tournament, after coming away from their opener against Serbia with a 1-0 win.
Meanwhile, Denmark will be in search of their first win after having to settle for a 1-1 draw against Slovenia in their opener.
