This change in policy sees the price cap go up from £2 to £3 after a two-year period of subsidized travel across the United Kingdom.
Whilst some areas, such as West Yorkshire, have opted to keep journeys capped at £2, all journeys that enter North Yorkshire or the city of York can be charged at up to £3 with prices at the discretion of each company.
For travel in and around York, pricing structures are as follows:
First York
Single journeys on a First Bus will cost £1.50, £2, £2.60 or £3 depending on the length of the trip.
East Yorkshire Motor Services
“The fare system operates on a distance-based banding structure. Fares range from £1.50 for shorter trips within York to £3 for longer-distance travel to destinations such as Pocklington, Market Weighton, Beverley, and Hull,” said a spokesperson for EYMS.
Here are some examples of current fares for journeys originating from York Railway Station:
- Windmill Lane: £1.50
- Tranby Avenue end: £2
- Dunnington: £2
- Pocklington: £3
- Market Weighton: £3
- Beverley: £3
- Hull City Centre: £3
As shown above, fares range from £1.50 for shorter trips within York to £3 for longer-distance travel to destinations such as Pocklington, Market Weighton, Beverley, and Hull.
Additionally, on York Locals 12/14 service, fares have been frozen at their pre-rise rate of £2 and under – making sure services are still affordable.
Reliance
Fares for Reliance are now capped at £3 for a single or £6 return with some of the fares, for return and shorter journeys, below the cap.
For example, a return from York City Centre to Skelton is now £5.70 whereas fares from York to Easingwold, Helmsley, or Thirsk will reach the fare cap.
Transdev/Coastliner
Transdev, which operates the Coastliner service – in addition to the 24 and 25 in York itself – has increased its fare to £3, with a £2.50 adult fare being charged for ‘very short journeys’.
An example of a short journey that falls within the £2.50 range would be Lindsey Avenue, in Holgate, to York Railway Station.
Under 19s travelling within York and North Yorkshire will be charged £1 for their trips.
The company has also frozen its day, week, and month tickets – allowing those who travel regularly the chance to save on the price of a single ticket, depending on how often they travel.
Arriva
For fares in North Yorkshire, Arriva said passengers will not be charged more than the £3 cap.
It has suggested that passengers tell drivers where they’re travelling upon boarding, something which will allow them to buy the best value ticket for their journey.
Connexions
Connexions, which operates the 13 – Haxby and 16 – Acomb routes in York in addition to others across the county, are raising the price of a single journey from £2 to £2.50.
In a statement, it said: “These are increasing due to the National fare cap rise. We aren’t adopting the new £3 fare as we feel this jump is too great.”
Pullman
In a statement on its website, York Pullman said: “This is a great opportunity to get out and about for less and let the bus take the worry out of travel and parking problem.
“This scheme has been extended but the cost has increased to £3.”
This scheme will apply to all York Pullman local bus services. Other ticket offers are available:
