Bungie has revealed it has plans to support Destiny 2 with new content — both paid-for and free — through until at least 2026, as it announces a change in how it approaches and distributes its post-launch expansions. Instead of building up to an annual DLC release, the developer confirms it will instead ship two medium-sized expansions every six months. It will then fill the gaps left with four free content updates every year.
Via a roadmap, Bungie has confirmed the next Destiny 2 expansion, currently called Codename Apollo, will launch in the summer of 2025. Then, six months later in the winter season of 2025, Codename Behemoth will release.
On the change in structure, Bungie said: “We’ve loved creating annual expansions and are especially proud of The Final Shape. But the truth is that they dominate almost all our development effort. We need to free ourselves up to explore and innovate with how we deliver Destiny 2 content so we can invest in areas of the game that will feel more impactful to players.” Instead of the traditional story-focused, one-shot campaigns Bungie has been doing for years, these new expansions will “explore exciting new formats” like a non-linear story, a Metroidvania structure, and survival shooters.
“Departing from one-shot campaigns doesn’t mean we are turning away from great story telling. Going forward, we want to return the mystery and wonder that was woven into the fabric of early Destiny, when the story felt ripe with possibilities and an epic sense of exploration and discovery,” explained game director Tyson Green. The time in between the main expansions will be filled by four free content updates, which are said to contain new activities, rewards, weekly events, fresh features, and game balance adjustments.
The team also states it’s going to try and make Destiny 2 more approachable for new players via updates to the activity UI and Director menu. “And we’re reworking our reward model to make sure that all of those activities offer meaningful rewards.”
Bungie shared the news as the Destiny franchise turned 10 years old, after the original game released on 9th September 2014. To celebrate, players can earn an armour set for every class based on what was revealed in the very first piece of concept art for Destiny. There’ll also be a new Legend title to earn by completing a set of challenges.
