The UK Government has just updated its travel advice for Britons thinking of visiting the popular tourist destination of Thailand.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) gave an “updated assessment that terrorists are likely to try and carry out attacks in Thailand”.

Regarding the threat of terror, Britons were encouraged to consult UK Counter Terrorism Policing for information on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack.
Counter Terrorism Policing said: “The chances of being caught up in a terrorist incident are low but sadly we have seen atrocities take place in the UK and abroad. It is important everyone stays alert and knows what to do if the worst was to happen.”
Britons were advised to check the latest UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice for the country they are visiting, ensure they have adequate travel insurance – and check the small print – and watch the Counter Terrorism Policing’s holiday safety film.
What to do in the case of an emergency
- Run to a place of safety, as this is better than trying to surrender or negotiate.
- Hide rather than confront. Barricade yourself in, turn your phone on silent and only use it when it is safe to do so.
- Inform the local emergency services, ensuring you know the necessary contact numbers in the country you are travelling to.
Holidaymakers were also encouraged to read the FCDO’s important information on how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad, plus what to do in the event of a terrorist attack.
The FCDO continued: “Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Thailand.”
Areas where the FCDO advises against all but essential travel due to regular terrorist attacks
- Pattani province
- Yala province
- Narathiwat province
- Southern Songkhla province, except for the areas north of and including the A43 road between Hat Yai and Sakom; and the areas north-west of the train line which runs between Hat Yai and Padang Besar
- Hat Yai to Padang Besar train line, which was attacked in 2022

Britons were told: “Martial law is in place in most areas in these provinces, which means security forces have greater security enforcement and investigative powers.
“However, terrorist attacks could take place anywhere in Thailand. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.”
Potential terrorist targets includesecurity forces, government offices, hotels, shops and supermarkets, and transport infrastructure.
Holidaymakers were informed about terrorist attacks in recent years. The FCDO said: “In 2019, there were a number of small explosions in Bangkok Satun City, and Phatthalung province in the south of Thailand.
“In 2018, there was a series of small explosions on Samila beach in Songkhla City.”
