British National Road Championships: Travel, parking and race times

The British Cycling National Road Championships will come to the North East this weekend and we have compiled a piece on the road closures, parking, and activities available for the event.

The competition’s road race will take place on Saltburn Bank on Sunday (June 23) and will see the women’s race kick off the day at 8:45am.

The men’s race will then begin at 1:30pm.

Glenside will be closed from it junction with with Windsor Road to the junction with Albion Terrace to all traffic beginning at 6am, with the road reopening at 7pm.

Car parking in the area will be suspended from 12:01am, while the rest of the route will be operating a rolling closure over a 15-minute window as the racers pass through.

There will be a clearway order implemented on the day meaning any parking on the race route will be suspended from 0600.

Organisers have urged those looking to attend to travel by bike or public transport with parking limited.

They have also confirmed a return park and ride facility is available to book.

Those looking to use this service will be able to park at Saltburn Station Square and Kirkleatham Walled Garden.

Direct trains to Saltburn will be available from Redcar, Middlesbrough, Thornaby, Yarm, Eaglescliffe and Darlington.

There is a direct service from and to Manchester which calls at Northallerton, Thirsk, York, Leeds, Dewsbury and Huddersfield.

For those travelling by bike, the Sustrans team will be on hand on Marine Parade to offer free bike storage and a repair service.

Speaking on the event, Tees Valley Mayor, Ben Houchen, said: “It will be fantastic to welcome back the British National Road Championships to our region, which is continuing to grow as a cycling destination.

“These routes will not only challenge the best cyclists in the country but also provide a great showcase for everything Tees Valley has to offer for visitors.”
