A British tourist has died in Greece after allegedly losing consciousness during a diving trip.

The man, who has not been named, reportedly fell unconscious in the sea in Vougliameni south of the capital Athens yesterday afternoon.

He is said to have lost consciousness while diving with instructors from a private company, MailOnline reports citing the Coast Guard.

Now two people have been arrested in connection with the tragedy.

A 46-year-old diving instructor and his 37-year-old assistant were arrested, the outlet reports.

An autopsy has been scheduled to take place at Greece’s Forensic and Toxicology Laboratory of the School of Medicine.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of the incident and took him to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The local Port Authority has reportedly confiscated diving equipment distributed by the company and it is carrying out a preliminary probe into the death.

The Attica coast near Athens is known for beaches and clear waters filled with relics and shipwrecks popular among divers.

The water temperature remains at over 20C from late May until end of November and underwater visibility is said to be excellent most of the time.
