Brighton have held discussions with St. Pauli in their quest to make Fabian Hurzeler the Premier League’s youngest ever manager, talkSPORT understands.

The St. Pauli boss has emerged as the Seagulls’ top target to replace Roberto De Zerbi following a thorough selection process.

The American-born 31-year-old has earned rave reviews in Germany, which could now see him make the move to England.

Brighton had spoken to Graham Potter about a possible return, but as previously reported by talkSPORT, that is not a likely option.

Potter is believed to be keeping his options open in case Gareth Southgate quits England after the upcoming Euros.

The Seagulls were also keen on Kieran McKenna before he signed a new contract at Ipswich.

Hurzeler guided St Pauli to promotion to the Bundesliga after a 13-year hiatus, having only taken up the role 18 months ago.

He previously spent four years at German amateur side FC Pipinsried which presented him with his first managerial opportunity.

Malmo boss Henrik Rydstrom was another believed to be on Brighton’s shortlist having guided the club to the Swedish title last season, but Brighton currently only have eyes on Hurzeler.

And in a boost for Brighton, Hurzeler has been approved by the FA for visa purposes, meaning he would be free to take up the vacant position at the Amex Stadium.

Hurzeler, who was born in Houston, Texas, has never coached in the top-flight, but will break his duck next season whether that is in the Premier League or Bundesliga.

He took over St Pauli in December 2022 with the Hamburg-based club hovering above the relegation zone in Bundesliga 2.

Scott Minto believes Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna would be a good replace for Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton

His presence had an immediate impact as St Pauli went on to win their first ten matches under the gaze of the Hurzeler where they eventually finished fifth.

The American capped off a sensational 18-months by steering his side to the title in empathic fashion.

Hurzeler has also had spells as assistant manager for Germany’s Under-18 and Under-20 sides.

Due to his success as a young manager in Germany, Hurzeler has been compared to now national team boss Julian Nagelsmann.

However, speaking earlier this year, he said: “It wouldn’t be fair to him [to be compared] because he is an amazing coach.

“Of course, I always hear those comparisons with Julian Nagelsmann. But like I said, I must stay humble and walk my own way.

“I can’t do it the same way because that is the Julian Nagelsmann way, and I try to go the Fabian Hürzeler way.”
