Brian Cox Doubles Down on Criticism of ‘Overrated’ Hollywood Stars Like Johnny Depp & Steven Seagal

Must read

Critically acclaimed actor Brian Cox, who recently starred in HBO’s Succession, called out several actors in his 2022 memoir Putting the Rabbit in the Hat. Some of the passages included references to Johnny Depp, Edward Norton, Steven Seagal, and Quentin Tarantino.

In a new interview with The Guardian, Cox admitted he upset several fellow actors over the years. In his memoir, he called Johnny Depp “so overblown, so overrated,” which led to him turning down a role in The Pirates of the Caribbean. He also had other notes about fellow celebrities, as he called Steven Seagal, with whom he worked on 1996’s The Glimmer Man “as ludicrous in real life as he appears on screen,” noted Edward Norton is “a nice lad, but a bit of a pain in the arse because he fancies himself as a writer-director.” He called Michael Caton-Jones, who directed him in Rob Roy, a “complete arsehole.”

Succession star Brian Cox discusses Logan’s children on Late Night with Seth Meyers, dropping his favorite line from the series.

I feel I’ve upset a few people over the years,” Cox noted about his open views in the new interview. “The problem is, I can be quite a loudmouth. Sometimes I have been fairly volatile, and I think, ‘Why the f**k did you say that?'”

There’s a lot of stuff I’ve done which I look at and think, ‘That was crap.’

He continued, “There’s a lot of stuff I’ve done which I look at and think, ‘That was crap.’ No, I’m not going to go down that road.”

Succession star Brian Cox reveals on The Tonight Show why he believed he would be starring in a new James Bond film — and why this wasn’t the case.

Cox doubled down on his original comments, adding, “The thing is, certain people are overrated. But then they probably think they’re overrated as well. So I’m not saying anything they don’t think anyway.”

Brian Cox Also Addressed His Succession’s Co-Star Method Acting

Brian Cox explained he can’t stand method acting. The actor believes “it’s pointless, selfish, an enemy of the imagination and destroys the atmosphere for others on set.” One of the people who adopted method acting was his Succession co-star Jeremy Strong, who plays one of his on-screen children. Cox didn’t agree with that.

He was wonderful to act with,” Cox noted about working with Strong. “I had no argument with Jeremy’s acting.” He added, “He would be an even better actor if he just got rid of that so there would be much more inclusiveness in what he did.”

Cox further explained, “Well, it’s not good for the ensemble. It creates hostility. That’s the problem.” He explained he didn’t address this with Strong. “No, not in the way I would like to have talked to him, but it’s a very emotive subject for people who follow the Strasberg line.”

In 2023, Cox noted that it would’ve been more helpful if Strong had been more relaxed on set. While he praised Strong’s acting skills, he told Town & Country magazine that he could’ve been more relaxed. “He’s still that guy, because he feels if he went somewhere else he’d lose it. But he won’t! Strong is talented. He’s f**king gifted. When you’ve got the gift, celebrate the gift. Go back to your trailer and have a hit of marijuana, you know?”
