A person has sadly lost their life at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport today, after ‘falling’ into a running aircraft engine. The engine was of a KLM Embraer E190 aircraft.

Flight 1341 to Billund

The indecent occurred just before 15:00 local time this afternoon, when an unspecified person ‘fell’ into the running engine of the jet. The Embraer 190 was readying to take off for Billund in Denmark, operating flight KL 1341.

The flight, which has a pushback time of 14:25, was scheduled to be operated today by PH-EZL, a 14-year-old Embraer regional jet.

Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, Schiphol Airport said,

“Today there was a horrible incident where a person ended up in an airplane engine. Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we are caring for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this. The Royal Military Police is currently conducting an investigation.”

Massive response

Emergency crews carried out what was described as a ‘massive’ response after reports came in regarding the tragedy at around 15:00 local time.

In a statement, the ‘Koninklijke Marechaussee’ Royal Military Police said,

An incident occurred this afternoon on the Schiphol platform where a person fell into a running aircraft engine and died. The Marechaussee is starting an investigation.

Shortly after, the Marechaussee posted that ‘all passengers and employees of the flight in question have been disembarked and are being taken care of.’ This suggests that the fatality was nothing to do with the passengers or crew.

Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the deceased.
