The bodies of a British woman and her fiance have been discovered in separate rooms at a tourist villa in Vietnam, police said.

The victims were named locally as Greta Marie Otteson, a 33-year-old Briton, and Arno Els Quinton, a 36-year-old South African, who were staying at the complex in Hội An in the central Quang Nam province.

The bodies were found by villa staff and police officers at 11.18am on 26 December.

According to media reports, Otteson’s body was discovered on her bed on the first floor while Quinton was found in the same position in another room.

A forensic examination showed no evidence of physical trauma or violence and there were no signs of a break-in, the website VnExpress reported.

Both victims had registered for long-term temporary residence at the tourist villa since 4 July last year.

Investigators noted the presence of several used alcohol bottles at the scene.

Otteson was as a social media marketing manager, who had previously worked in Dubai, while Quinton had worked as a barista.

A spokesperson for the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said on Thursday: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Vietnam and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Dayle Visser, a friend of Quinton, wrote on X: “Rest in peace my brother. Thank you for always being the fierce friend you were. You saved me many a time. You were real and lived life harder than most people could ever dream of. I love you and I will always miss you.”
