Danny Boyle and co-writer Alex Garland have returned to the 28 Days Later franchise with a third film, 28 Years Later.
The first of a new trilogy, Cillian Murphy reprises his role as Jim from the 2002 zombie apocalypse classic.
He’ll be joined by an impressive cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell.
The biggest British blockbuster of 2025 wrapped earlier this year but it has now been discovered by Wired that the movie was shot on iPhone 15 Pro Max with attachments for lenses, mics, tripods and other accessories.
It’s not the first movie to be filmed on iPhone, but with a budget of $75 million, it breaks the record for the most expensive to be shot on mobile phone.
This shouldn’t be too surprising though given that Boyle directed 28 Days Later on eight lightweight Canon digital camcorders, which gave it a distinct grainy look.
This was in the standard definition of 480, which is lower than the 720 of HD; meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro Max can shoot in 4K.
Whatever the case, it looks like the director is trying to recapture something of that handmade feel to the original movie and we can’t wait to see the results in the first trailer.
28 Years Later hits cinemas on June 20, 2025.
