A brand new shopping centre costing millions of pounds is set to open its doors in Derriford, Plymouth, this October, promising to create more than 100 full-time jobs, according to the city council.
Construction began on the council-owned site back in June 2023 and the first phase will be completed by this Friday, paving the way for supermarket giant Aldi to begin fitting out their store.
The development will breathe new life into the former Seaton Barracks Parade Ground on the A386, a site that has lain dormant for more than two decades. Other confirmed outlets include M&S Food, Costa, Pets Corner, PureGym, Oggy Oggy Pasty Company, and there will also be 12 EV charging points available.
During a cabinet meeting, Cllr Mark Lowry (Lab), the cabinet member for finance, revealed that the council would be “handing over” a 20,000 sq ft space to Aldi this week, with the store set to open in October alongside the rest of the £20 million complex.
ADC Kimberley Ltd, the council’s chosen developer since 2019 following a competitive bidding process, is overseeing the construction of the project, which received planning permission two years ago, reports Plymouth Live.
Cllr Lowry stated: “We have taken the opportunity to buy the land and work with developers to bring that project forward. Not only will it provide jobs but every business will be paying rent to us and we can use that to pay for services. We are doing our bit.”
